Taoxichuan: A Porcelain Factory Reborn

A 19 century porcelain factory turned into Jingdezhen's beating creative heart — brick workshops and kiln chimneys now full of studios, galleries and cafes, and a weekend maker's market where hundreds of young ceramic artists sell what they threw that week.

The imperial kilns tell you how porcelain was made for the emperor. Taoxichuan tells you what the city is doing with clay right now. Built inside the shell of a state-owned porcelain factory that fell silent in the 1990s, it is the place where Jingdezhen turned its industrial past into a living arts district — part museum, part maker's market, part night out — and where thousands of young ceramicists from across China and the world have come to build a life around the wheel.

From "Universe" factory to creative district

Taoxichuan grew out of the Yuzhou ("Universe") Porcelain Factory, one of the ten great state-run porcelain works that mass-produced tableware for the country in the mid-twentieth century. When the planned economy wound down, factories like it closed, leaving whole quarters of empty brick workshops. Rather than demolish them, the city restored the best of the complex from 2016 onward — keeping the sawtooth-roofed halls, the sooty kilns and the tall chimneys — and let studios, galleries, shops and cafes move in. The result is often called China's ceramic answer to Beijing's 798 art zone.

Dusk over the restored workshops — the old Yuzhou factory halls, now lit as a public square where families gather in the evening.

The architecture is the exhibit

What makes Taoxichuan special is that the industrial fabric was kept honest. Red-brick halls with rows of north-facing sawtooth windows — a Bauhaus-influenced factory design meant to flood the workshop floor with even daylight — now shelter design shops and studios. Old tunnel kilns are left in place as sculpture; a chimney becomes a landmark you navigate by. The patina of the working factory — scorched brick, iron beams, worn concrete — was treated as something to protect, not paper over.

New architecture threaded through the old works — a steel-and-glass hall rises behind the preserved brick kilns and a surviving chimney at dusk.

The market & the "Jingdezhen drifters"

The soul of Taoxichuan is its market. Several times a week — and in far larger spring and autumn fairs — the central square fills with stalls run by young makers selling their own work: cups, teapots, jewellery, sculpture, the odd and the exquisite side by side. Many of the sellers are "Jingpiao", the drifters who moved to Jingdezhen to make ceramics, the way painters once moved to Paris. Prices are set by the maker, most pieces are one-offs, and you are buying directly from the hands that threw them — which is the whole point.

Market night on the main street — stalls under yellow umbrellas and crowds threading past the old kiln flue that arcs overhead.

You don't buy a factory cup here. You buy the week someone spent making it.

After dark

Come in the evening. The market runs late, the chimneys are floodlit, and the square fills with music, food stalls and people — students, collectors, families, travellers. Bars and cafes spill out of the brick halls, there is often live music, and the whole district takes on the easy, unhurried mood of a place that belongs to young people. It is one of the few sights in Jiangxi that is arguably better after sunset than before it.

After dark — the row of brick halls outlined in warm light and mirrored in the still water.

Beyond the market

Even on a quiet weekday the district rewards a wander. There is a serious contemporary-ceramics art museum, permanent design and studio shops where you can watch makers at work, a well-known bookshop, roasteries and restaurants, and a boutique hotel built into the old factory. If you have time and interest, ask about the short hands-on classes — an hour at the wheel here is the best souvenir Jingdezhen sells.

Visiting

Taoxichuan sits in the city and is free to enter; you only pay for the museum, classes and whatever you buy. It works beautifully as the evening half of a Jingdezhen day — imperial kilns and the ceramics museum by day, Taoxichuan and its market after dark. Time your visit to catch a market day if you possibly can; it is a different, livelier place when the stalls are out.
