When to Visit Jiangxi

Jiangxi sits in the humid subtropics of southeast China, near the Tropic of Cancer and not far from the sea. The four seasons are clearly drawn — cold springs, hot summers, dry autumns, cold winters — but spring and autumn run short while summer and winter run long. Summers are hot and wet on the plains, winters mild and grey; the shoulder seasons are when the province is at its most photogenic. Here is how to choose your window.

Spring (March–May): the famous bloom

Spring is peak season, and for good reason. In late March the rapeseed fields of Wuyuan turn whole valleys gold, terraces stacked beneath whitewashed Hui-style villages. Tea picking begins, waterfalls run full, and the air is clear between rains. Book lodging well ahead — the bloom draws domestic crowds, especially on weekends.

春季是旺季，且名副其實。三月下旬，婺源油菜花將整片山谷染成金黃，梯田層疊於白牆黛瓦的徽派村落之下。茶葉開採、瀑布豐沛、雨歇時空氣清澈。住宿務必提前預訂——花期吸引大量國內遊客，週末尤甚。

Summer (June–August): green peaks, real heat

Summer is hot and humid on the plains — Nanchang regularly tops 35°C — but Jiangxi is ringed by mountains on three sides and buffered by Poyang Lake to the north, a natural air-conditioner that traps moisture into drifting cloud and forest breeze. Climb a few hundred metres and the heat falls away: Lushan averages around 22°C in summer and logs some 200 foggy days a year. Its hill town of Guling even takes its name from the English word "cooling", coined by the foreign residents who summered here a century ago. This is the season of cloud seas and "cloud waterfalls" spilling over the ridges, of solar halos and sudden rainbows, of thundering falls and cliffside villages catching the breeze. Carry rain protection: the plum-rain front (meiyu) brings heavy, concentrated showers from June into early July.

夏季平原悶熱——南昌常超35°C——但江西三面環山、北倚鄱陽湖，宛如一台天然冷氣，兜住水汽，化作漫山雲霧與穿林涼風。登高數百米，暑氣便消：廬山夏季均溫約22°C，年霧日約200天；山上的牯嶺鎮之名，正取自英文「cooling」（清涼）——百餘年前在此避暑的外國僑民所起。這是雲海與「雲瀑」漫過山脊、日暈與驟雨彩虹交替、瀑布奔湧、崖壁山村納涼的季節。請備好雨具：六月至七月初梅雨鋒面常帶來集中強降雨。

Autumn (September–November): the connoisseur’s season

Many seasoned travellers call autumn the best time of all. It is the driest, clearest stretch of the year — fewer overcast days than any other season — so skies open and humidity drops. Wuyuan stages a second act, the "shai qiu" harvest, when villagers sun-dry chillies and corn on round trays across the rooftops of Huangling, and the high granite platforms of Sanqing offer their cleanest odds on a sunrise above the cloud sea. Maple leaves turn around the ancient villages through November, and crowds thin after the early-October national holiday.

不少資深旅行者認為秋季最佳。這是全年最乾爽、最晴朗的時段——陰雨天少於其他任何季節——天高氣爽、濕度下降。婺源上演第二幕「曬秋」，村民在篁嶺屋頂圓匾上晾曬辣椒與玉米；三清山高處的花崗岩平台也迎來觀賞雲海日出機率最高的時節。古村楓葉於十一月轉紅，十一黃金週後人潮明顯減少。

Winter (December–February): quiet and atmospheric

Winters are mild but damp and often overcast; winter sets in late here and the frost period is short. It is low season — prices ease and sites are uncrowded. When a cold front does arrive, snow and glittering rime ice dust Lushan and Sanqing, glazing the granite spires into something ethereal — a spectacle photographers wait all year for. Down south the Gannan navel-orange harvest is in full swing. If you don’t mind grey skies and pack warm, this is the cheapest, calmest window, and the porcelain workshops of Jingdezhen are at their most welcoming.

冬季溫和但潮濕、多陰天；此地入冬遲、霜凍期短。屬淡季——價格回落、景點不擁擠。一旦冷鋒來襲，廬山、三清山落雪並結出晶瑩霧凇冰掛，使花崗岩峰林如夢似幻——這是攝影者守候整年的奇景。贛南一帶正值臍橙豐收。若不介意灰天且注意保暖，這是最實惠、最清靜的窗口，景德鎮的瓷器作坊也最為好客。
