Huangling’s Four Seasons

Huangling is a five-hundred-year-old Hui village built up the spine of a steep hill in Wuyuan, its whitewashed houses and black-tiled roofs stacked so tightly there is barely a flat metre between them. With almost no level ground to dry a harvest, generations of villagers learned to spread their crops on round bamboo trays propped from the eaves — a practice now famous across China as “shai qiu,” the autumn sun-drying. Reached by cable car above a valley of terraced fields, Huangling puts on a different show in every season. Here is the year, turn by turn.

篁嶺是婺源一座有五百年歷史的徽派古村，依一道陡坡層層而建，白牆黛瓦緊湊得幾乎找不出一塊平地。正因無地可曬，世代村民學會把作物攤在從屋簷支出的圓形竹匾上——這便是如今聞名全國的「曬秋」。乘索道越過一谷梯田即可抵達，篁嶺四季各有不同的演出。以下，便是它一年的輪轉。

Spring — the rapeseed terraces

From mid-March the terraces below the village flood with flowering rapeseed, band after band of brilliant yellow curving around the contours of the hill beneath the whitewashed gables. It is the image that made Wuyuan famous, and Huangling — high enough to look down on the whole sweep — has the finest seat in the house. Pink-and-white blossom frames the lanes, and on a clear morning the valley fills with drifting mist.

三月中旬起，村下梯田被盛放的油菜花淹沒，一道道明黃順著山勢起伏，鋪展在白牆馬頭牆之下。這正是讓婺源聲名遠播的畫面，而高踞山脊、俯瞰全景的篁嶺，恰好佔了最好的位置。粉白花樹點綴巷弄，晴朗的清晨，谷中常漫起浮霧。

Summer — cool green and quiet

Once the bloom passes the crowds thin, and summer is Huangling at its most relaxed. The terraces turn deep green, old camphor trees throw cool shade over the lanes, and the village plants its courtyards and walls thick with flowers. Mornings are clear; afternoon showers come and go quickly. It is a good season to wander slowly, photograph the architecture without a crowd in the frame, and sit out the heat of the plains up on the breezy ridge.

花期一過，人潮漸散，夏天是篁嶺最從容的時節。梯田轉為濃綠，古樟為巷弄投下清蔭，村中庭院與牆頭遍植繁花。清晨通透，午後陣雨來去匆匆。這是個適合慢遊的季節——可在無人入鏡時從容拍攝建築，也可登上多風的山脊，避開平原的暑氣。

Autumn — the “shai qiu” harvest

Autumn is the headline act. As the harvest comes in, the rooftops bloom with colour: round bamboo trays of red chillies, golden chrysanthemums, orange persimmon, corn and pumpkin, set out to dry in the clear autumn sun. Maples and ancient ginkgoes turn red and gold around the eaves, and the whole village becomes a tapestry of harvest colour against the white walls and dark tiles.

秋天是壓軸大戲。隨著收成入村，屋頂次第綻放色彩：一只只圓竹匾盛著紅辣椒、金菊花、橙柿、玉米與南瓜，攤在澄澈的秋陽下晾曬。簷邊紅楓與古銀杏轉為赤金，整座村落在白牆黛瓦間織成一幅豐收的織錦。

There is a working logic to the spectacle. With almost no flat land to spare, the round trays are propped on wooden racks that jut from the upper windows, so the same square metre serves as roof and threshing floor at once. Villagers turn the crops through the day to dry them evenly — it is real farm work, not a show staged for cameras, which is exactly why it photographs so well.

這奇景背後自有一套生活邏輯。因幾乎無餘地可用，村民把圓竹匾架在自樓上窗口伸出的木架上，讓同一方寸既是屋頂、又是曬場。一整天裡，他們不時翻動作物以求晾曬均勻——這是實打實的農活，並非為鏡頭而擺拍，也正因如此才格外耐看。

Winter — snow on the black tiles

Winter is the quiet season, and when a cold front brings snow it is arguably the most beautiful of all. White settles along the tiled ridges and the bamboo drying-racks, the last red maple leaves hang on above it, and the village empties of crowds. Red lanterns and trays of chillies keep their colour against the snow, and icicles fringe the eaves over a valley gone white and blue. Down in the valley the terraces sleep; up here, woodsmoke and lantern-light carry the village toward the Lunar New Year.

冬天是靜謐的季節；一旦冷鋒帶來落雪，這也許是四季中最美的一幕。白雪覆於瓦脊與竹製曬架之上，最後幾片紅楓懸於其間，村中人潮散盡。紅燈籠與辣椒匾在雪色中依舊鮮亮，簷下垂著冰凌，谷地一片素白與湛藍。谷底梯田沉睡，山上則以炊煙與燈火，把村落送向農曆新年。

How to visit

Huangling sits in Wuyuan County, about an hour by road from Wuyuan’s high-speed-rail station; from there a scenic shuttle or taxi reaches the cable-car base, and the cable car carries you up to the village itself. Allow at least half a day — a full day if you want both the terraces and the lanes — and stay overnight in one of the village inns to catch the rooftops in early light and after dark, the two best windows for photographs.

篁嶺位於婺源縣，距婺源高鐵站車程約一小時；再換乘景區接駁車或計程車抵達索道站，乘索道直上村落。建議至少安排半天——若想兼看梯田與巷弄則需一整天——並在村中民宿留宿一晚，以趕上晨光與入夜兩段最佳的拍攝時刻。

Whichever season you choose, Huangling rewards an unhurried visit — a slow loop of the lanes, a seat with a view of the rooftops, and the patience to wait for the light to turn.
